Radar Sign and Radar Trailer FAQ

  • Will you need solar, battery only (recharge a radar trailer every 2 days and a fixed radar sign every 2 weeks) or AC 110 volt or 220 volt?

Solar is green way but can cost $500.00 more then battery only trailers and $100.00 for on fixed battery only pole signs and $200.00 more than AC fixed signs. To know solar panel size means knowing how many vehicles a day and what area of the country you are in and how many trees may be in the way to find the right size solar panel, we have documents to help you on this.

Battery only means bringing the unit in to recharge and it may stop working at times when it runs out of a charge.

AC means installing power and utility meter and this can be costly unless you have a way to run an outdoor extension cord.

What size LED numerals will you need on your radar speed sign or trailer?

10.5 inch numeral LED radar signs are for 35 MPH and below

14 inch numeral LED radar signs are for 35 - 50 MPH roads

16 inch numeral LED signs are for  45 -60 MPH+ roads

18 inch numeral LED signs are for  55+ MPH+ roads

We offer these on poles and trailers and dollies.

What reporting from a radar sign or radar trailer do you need?

Reporting average speeds, time of day average speeds, see our stats package software.

Many like to get a baseline report before showing the speeds to drivers, this is a good way to show the effects of the sign when turned on and runs more reports.

Does the radar speed sign or trailer need to be MUTCD compliant?

MUTCD - Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices - is a federal regulation / guidleline many countes and city traffic engneers require and specifies many attributes like color of LED (amber) color of metal speed sign attached in school zones etc

    http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/

Do you need variable messages on your radar trailer?

Certain versions of radar speed trailers can display one to four lines of messages, some are full matrix which can take all 3 lines and make 1 large message and pictures, these can cost up to $30,000.00. We have many at $18,000.00 and below.

Do you need your fixed radar sign to be quickly removeable?

With battery only signs you  need to unlock the sign quickly and move to recharge in a dry area, also some customers want to quickly unlock move solar and AC units to multiple pole locations.

How weather and vandal resistant should your radar sign be?

Applications: NEMA 3 electrical enclosures are typically used in outdoor applications for wiring and junction boxes. This style of enclosure provides protection against windblown dust, falling rain, sleet, snow, and external ice formation. This enclosure can be used indoors and the enclosure protects against dripping water. Note that this style of enclosure requires a gasket sealing to keep-out dust. Some enclosure models have hasps for padlocking the cover to the enclosure base. Note that Nemaco offers the Tigerbox™ NEMA 3 Enclosures with durable gasket seals for both indoor and outdoor applications.

    NEMA 4 Enclosure Rating

Definition:Intended for indoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose directed water; undamage by ice which forms on the enclosure.

Applications: The typical NEMA 4 industrial enclosure can be used in many applications for occasional washdown occurs or where machine tool cutter coolant is used and sprayed. The Nema 4 enclosure also serves well in applications where there is possibly dripping water in a building. The NEMA 4 enclosure has a drip edge (gutter) to collect water near the enclosure seals. A NEMA 4 enclosure must have quality seal gasket to prevent water ingress and the door is typically clamped for maximum sealing. The Nemaco Tigerbox™ Nema 4 enclosure has a continuous hinge, mounting feet and optional padlock hasps. The Tough Tigerbox™ NEMA 4 enclosures are available in sizes from small wall mounts to two-door floor mount enclosure models.

    NEMA 4X Enclosure Rating

Definition:Intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust and rain, splashing water, and hose directed water; undamaged by ice which forms on the enclosure.

Applications: The typical NEMA 4X enclosures is fabricated from stainless steel or plastic. The NEMA enclosure can be used in harsher environments than standard NEMA 4 units since the NEMA 4X enclosure has corrosion resistance. Applications where corrosive materials (for example saltwater) and caustic cleaners are used necessitate the use of a NEMA 4X enclosure. A few examples are NEMA 4X enclosure applications for sanitary poultry processing facilities (where total washdown with disinfectants occur repeatedly), petro-chemical refineries and offshore drilling platforms for oil and natural gas. The NEMA 4X enclosure is used when protection from the worst environments is required. Many NEMA 4X industrial enclosures are available in sizes from small wall mounts to two-door floor mount models.
